About TechWriter Ltd
TechWriter is a company owned and operated by David Armstrong from his home office in Motueka, near Nelson, New Zealand.
David has been involved in computing and business technology since the early 1970s. In the 1980s he was a programmer/analyst developing fourth-generation languages. He worked as IT manager for The Press newspaper (Christchurch) for three years, and was The Press Computer Editor from 1991 to 2001.
In his role as a journalist, he observed not only the rapid development of the Internet during the '90s but also the problems and opportunities encountered by businesses as they try to utilise new technologies. He used his writing and editing skills to make information about complex technology accessible to a wide readership.
Since 2001 David has operated TechWriter, building a base of website clients to about 120. He has co-written one technical book, helped write many press releases, and provided website design and usability audits for small to medium businesses. He has also advised and assisted clients on search engine optimisation.
In 2009 David moved from Christchurch to Motueka, as is now available to build new sites for clients in the region around Motueka.
Business Philosophy
 One of David's aims is to help people understand business and organisational use of the Internet. He enjoys working with small businesses and non-profit groups to help them understand how they can take effective advantage of technology without breaking their budgets.
Website design, consultancy and auditing involves five key activities and skills:
- Understanding the craft and artistry of page design and layout
- Understanding user-friendly website navigation, including crucially the ability to visualise how target visitors will navigate the site
- Computer programming and technical skills, and the recognition of programming standards, code clarity and easy maintainability
- Journalism and the ability to write and edit text succinctly and clearly
- Understanding business goals and strategies, and how a website can enhance business goals.
TechWriter provides proven expertise in all these five disciplines. Our business philosophy and plan is to:
- Offer this rare combination of skills within one project plan and cost structure.
- Minimise overheads so that our clients pay only for what we produce, not for expensive offices, marketing campaigns and IT equipment common used by larger design and consulting firms.
- Provide personal services, quickly attending to any problems and requests for updates or advice. Serving existing clients takes precedence over seeking new clients.
- Independence from any other Web-related businesses, ensuring that we have no vested interest in any advice or products we provide.
- Optionally offer an involvement in your business planning and operation, as an on-going strategic partner.
